Starting a franchise is like starting any other business.  It takes research, planning, and financing.  If you are in the market to buy a franchise selecting the right one is essential to your business success.  A good way to start is by listing out companies you¡¯re interested in.  Then make another list of your business goals, your skills and abilities, how much money you have to invest, what training you have, and what training you will need.  The companies that match your needs the most will help guide you through the rest of the selection process.

The first main area of consideration is the type of work environment you want to work in. 

1. What hours do you want to do business?

2. What products do you want to sale?  Food or merchandise?

3. Do you like working with people?

4. What businesses are you interested in?

These questions will help narrow your initial search to companies that interest you.

Next do some basic research on the types of franchises you have selected.  This can be done online.  Most franchises have corporate web sites that provide information on starting one of their franchises, fees charged, requirements, franchise opportunities that are currently available and in what areas, and general information.  These sites should also provide a breakdown of investment and financial requirements for starting a franchise.  This is vital to making sure you are financially prepared for entering the franchise business.

Select your top three choices and contact those franchises for more information.  Have a list of questions to ask and be prepared to answer some questions as well. Request that they send you information about buying one of their franchise opportunities.  When you receive the information you will probably be asked to fill out a survey.  After all they are looking to sell to stable and qualified buyers as much as you are looking to buy from a stable seller.

Visit franchises in surrounding markets and see how they are doing.  Observe if the stores are busy, if it looks like merchandise is moving, and check to see if the customers and employees seem happy.  When you talk with the owner ask them the following questions:

1. Does the company offer follow up support and training?

2. Did the company help with the set up?

3. Did the company help locating real estate? 

4. Did they help with merchandising?

5. Did the company help with the initial promotion for the grand opening?

6. Has their store met their investment goals?

7. Ask if the owner is satisfied with the company and if they would buy another franchise from this company if they had the opportunity?

If you sense that there is dissatisfaction or disappointment in the business as a general trend, then don¡¯t buy into that company.  Learn from the owners you talked to and look for general trends of profit or loss.

Next review the financial material given to you about the franchise.  Examine the business plan, training manual, operating manual, and market analysis.  Look to make sure the company will provide support and training that will meet your needs.  Also look for consistency in what the company liaison told you and what is in writing.

Examine the market you intend to enter and make sure it¡¯s not saturated already. Look to see what competition is in the area and if the market is strong enough to support your franchise.

After gathering the above information on your three selections, do a side by side comparison and see which one meets your business goals, personal interest goals, and financial goals.  If you still can¡¯t decide ask more questions.  This is an important and complicated matter that should not be rushed into.  Make sure you are comfortable with every aspect before you sign the final paper.
