Every company should have a web presence, especially new companies just starting out. Here are instructions for creating a professional website on a small budget.
The first thing you must do is purchase a domain name. This is the only expense that cannot be avoided. Do an internet search for domain names. This will bring you to a number of sites from which you can purchase your domain name. Look for a site that provides free email and url masking along with your domain name. It is important to have an email account that matches your domain name instead of a generic email address. ¡°My-business-at-free-email¡± does not look nearly as professional at ¡°John-doe-at-my-business¡±.
Once you have found the right site to purchase your domain name, you will need to come up with a domain name that is suitable to your business. Currently, very short domains names under five letters are rare, but you must be diligent about choosing as short a domain name as possible. If your domain name looks like ¡°my-business-is-the-very-best-dot-com¡± people will be more likely to give up before they ever get your domain name typed into he browser. If your domain name looks like ¡°my-business-dot-com¡±, you are likely to get more visitors. If you are not able to secure your actual business name, choose a word that closely relates to your industry as your domain name. You will have the opportunity to choose a ¡°.com¡±, ¡°.net¡±, ¡°.biz¡±, or ¡°.us¡±. It is not wise to purchase ¡°my-busines.us¡± if someone else owns ¡°my-business.com¡±. They are likely to get all of your business because people are more accustomed to typing ¡°.com¡±. If you find the perfect ¡°.com¡± for you, you may want to go ahead and purchase the other relating domains for future use as well.
The next thing you must do is create a website. Doing an internet search for ¡°free WebPages¡± will bring you many options on which to create your webpage. Choose from well-known names that you are familiar with, and then look at the degree of difficulty involved in creating a website. Another feature you want to look for when choosing your website provider is your ability to make a series of connected pages vs. a single page. Once you have chosen your site provider, make your free webpage using the sites template. Once you have completed your site using the template instructions, you can view your site and make small changes until you are satisfied. For special effects, you can do an online search of ¡°html tutorial¡± or ¡°easy html¡±. Reading these tutorials will show you how to add a little extra pizzazz to your site.
Once your free website is complete, go back to the site where you purchased your domain name. Under account information, you will find the option that allows you to link your free webpage to your domain name. Be sure to choose the free masking option so all of your website pages will show your paid domain name in the browser.
Your website is now complete. You can take it further by learning html and other programming codes. You can also choose to upgrade your free website for a small monthly fee that will eliminate outside advertisements on your page. This is recommended because you do not want advertisements on your page that compete for your business. |
