First, you need to accept it. You can¡¯t turn back the clock, so there is not point in dwelling on what you could have done. The facts are the facts. Maybe you should have seen the lay off coming, maybe you shouldn¡¯t have played hooky that extra day, but it can¡¯t be undone. As soon as you accept this fact you can move onto the next step.
Next, you need to learn from it. What went wrong? If the problem was your fault, than it is fairly easy to know what you need to fix in the future. If the problem was a layoff, or the employer¡¯s fault, there are still some things to be learned. What sign could you look for in the future to tell you whether your next employer will be a better match for you? Also, you should take this time to learn how to deal with this situation should it happen again.
Now, take the time to enjoy your time off. Forget the reasons why, and think of it as a little vacation. Take this time to catch up on the things that work wouldn¡¯t allow you to do. Spend some time with your family, get some cleaning done, spruce up your resume.
Next, get back on the horse. Start looking for another job. Everything happens for a reason. With that in mind, you may have an even better opportunity out there waiting for you. Have dreamed of starting a business or going back to school, now is the time to try these things out.
Now, not everyone can afford to be without a paycheck. If this is causing you stress, you may want to look for some help with your income. Go to your local unemployment office and see what resources there are. Don¡¯t be embarrassed to ask for help.
Along the same lines, there may be help for expenses. If you have student loans, check into deferments. Call your utilities and see if they have a program to help with those expenses. Talk to your church, this is what they are there for; people in times of need.
Check into alternative sources of income. Take a temporary position. Look at employment online. Take on projects as an independent contractor. Use your imagination.
If you are feeling depressed, talk it out. Grab a friend and have them listen to you. The most stressful situations can be calmed by just letting it out. If you still feel like you need help, get it. Talk to a counselor.
Don¡¯t give up. When you give up, you loose hope. This is worsened by the fact that you can¡¯t find a job, if you don¡¯t try. You may only be getting one call-back every couple of months, but if you don¡¯t try at all you can¡¯t get anywhere.
Lastly, know that this is temporary. If you keep trying, eventually you will find something.
