The answer to the question of whether or not your payment of child support will affect your credit rating is: yes, it absolutely will. However, there are a couple of different ways it may affect your credit rating depending on your circumstances and how your child support payments are collected. 

First, let¡¯s clarify one point: good credit resulting from paying your child support on time will not be reported. It works basically like paying your utilities; if you do not pay on time, you will be reported to the credit bureaus. Although you will not get credit for paying on time, don¡¯t be tempted not the pay because that will hurt your credit. A note about credit, one late payment on your credit report could possibly lower your score 20 to 30 points. For some, that is a devastating blow to an already struggling credit score. Another important point to remember about your credit report is that items reported on your credit history stay on your credit report for seven years. Most lenders only look closely at the past three years, but it could take a long time to recover from a couple of late payments. A low credit rating can prevent you from opening checking and savings accounts, renting apartments or houses, and establishing utilities and credit cards in your name in addition to making it very difficult or impossible to purchase a new house or car.

There is another way that your child support payments may affect your credit aside from being reported to the credit bureaus. Often when you apply for a loan, the lending institution may calculate your monthly child support payment into your debt to income ratio. Debt to income ratio refers to your percentage of monthly debt compared to your income; if your ratio is 40%, that means that 40% of your income is spent paying your debts (and this does not include utilities). The lower your debt to income ratio, the easier it will be for a financial institution to grant you a loan. Financial institutions are calculating child support into this ratio to ensure that any new payments you acquire through borrowing money will not interfere with your ability to pay your child support payments.
